Standard Hiking Itinerary

Day 1)

Arrive in Atlanta. Shuttle Pickup arrives at noon.  Transportation to Valley View (3 hr and 5               minute drive) with ETA and check in around 3:30pm.

***Alternatively, if you live in the region and / or prefer to drive: Meet at Timberlake campground 3270  Conleys Creek Rd, Whittier, NC 28789 at 3pm.

Pricing will be adjusted if not using shuttle service from airport ($75 less per person)

Enjoy evening at Valley View soaking up the view, relaxing in the hot tub, playing pool or sitting around the fire pit.

Cabin will be stocked with food and beer.  Enjoy a meal of cheeseburgers, corn on the cob, potato salad and chips at the authentic German Oktoberfest picnic table on the deck overlooking the amazing Valley View.

End the night sitting around the fire pit shooting the breeze and making the perfect S’more.

Day 2)

Arise to one of the most serene and amazing sunrises you will ever see.  Grab a blanket if you need one.  It can get chilly in the morning mountain air.

Make your breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, toast and OJ or coffee.

Be ready to meet outside at 9 am to pack your lunch & snacks for the day.

Shuttle leaves at 9:30 am.

This morning we take a 30 minute ride to Pinnacle Park .

We will be hiking to the top of The Pinnacle (elevation 5,008 feet) near Sylva for panoramic views of the valley in Jackson County. The steady uphill hike of 3.4 miles one way climbs 2,000 feet in elevation, following an old logging road for much of the way.  Points of interest will be a large split rock, fisher creek falls, lots rhododendron and of course the Pinnacle with jaw dropping panoramic views.  We will enjoy our lunch with a view before heading back down the way we came.

Dinner tonight will be in Sylva (where Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri was filmed) for the amazing beers of Innovation Brewing and your choice of Cosmic  food truck or Pie Times pizza.

Return to Valley View for the evening.

Day 3)

If you didn’t wake up early enough to see the sunrise yesterday, then you must take advantage today!

Make your breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, toast and OJ or coffee.

Be ready to meet outside at 9:30 am to pack your lunch & snacks for the day.

Shuttle leaves at 10:00 am.

Today you have your choice of Charlie Bunion or Black Balsam Knob.

Charlie Bunion - is a 50 minute drive away in Great Smoky National Park. This popular 8.1 mile out and back hike takes us on part of the Appalachian Trail and provides a 1640 foot elevation gain.  We will take in views of the Smokies, including peaks of Mount Le Conte (6,593 ft - 3rd highest in the park) and Myrtle Point (6,447 ft) while passing by fraser fir and red spruce woods, and keeping an eye out for wildlife from deer to bears, finally arriving at the rugged rock outcrop of Charles Bunion to take in the impressive panorama and eat our lunch.

Black Balsam Knob and Tennet Mountain This 1 hr 10 minute drive takes us along the incredible alpine views of the Blue Ridge Parkway. This 5 mile loop is a must-hike along the Blue Ridge Parkway.  It includes some of the most spectacular mountain balds in the Southern Appalachians.  Because these treeless mountaintops in the Pisgah National Forest have views similar to those iconic "Sound of Music" scenes, you may be singing "The Hills Are Alive."

Dinner tonight will be at Nantahalla Brewing in Bryson City.  Grab some BBQ or a Taco and wash it down with a delicious pint of God’s nectar.

Return to Valley View for the evening.

Day 4)

Be packed and ready to go by 8 am to load the shuttle.

Due to flight times (none should be made before 5pm) and unpredictable Atlanta traffic we need to pack your lunch & snacks for the day for an 8:30 departure.

Shuttle leaves promptly at 8:30 am in order to grab breakfast on the go at City Lights Cafe in Sylva, N.C. right when they open at 9am.

Whiteside Mountain - On our way back to Atlanta we stop off for our final hike in Cashiers, N.C.. Whiteside Mountain is simply breathtaking, there is no way around it.  This magnificent rock is about 390 to 460 million years old. This two-mile loop trail takes you on top of sheer 750-ft. high cliffs (plenty of railings for safety) with outstanding views to the east, south and west.   Do not get fooled by the impressive prominence and elevation of the mountain, as the hike up the mountain is quite easy with mild-grade elevation gain, making it perfectly doable in an hour or two.  Time permitting we can take a quick stop after the hike to see Bridal Veils and/or Dry Falls before making way back to Atlanta.

We will eat our packed lunches in the Shuttle on the journey home.

We aim to arrive back and conclude our shared journey at Atlanta’s airport at 3 pm.

If you drove and met up at Timberlake Campground you will either be dropped back off at Valley View or can follow the shuttle to Whiteside Mountain to depart upon conclusion of our hike.
